How to Enroll in VA Health Care

VA health care covers medical services, prescriptions, and specialty care. Here’s how to check eligibility and apply for enrollment.

Step 1 — Check Eligibility

Most veterans qualify, but eligibility is based on service history and discharge type.

  • Served in the active military, naval, or air service
  • Discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
  • Reservists and National Guard may qualify if called to active duty

Step 2 — Gather Required Info

Before applying, have this information ready:

  • Social Security Number
  • Military service history (DD214)
  • Insurance information (private, Medicaid, Medicare, etc.)
  • Dependent information (if applicable)

Most applications are processed within a week, though some take longer. You’ll receive an official letter of determination.
