How to Enroll in VA Health Care
VA health care covers medical services, prescriptions, and specialty care. Here’s how to check eligibility and apply for enrollment.
Step 1 — Check Eligibility
Most veterans qualify, but eligibility is based on service history and discharge type.
- Served in the active military, naval, or air service
- Discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
- Reservists and National Guard may qualify if called to active duty
Step 2 — Gather Required Info
Before applying, have this information ready:
- Social Security Number
- Military service history (DD214)
- Insurance information (private, Medicaid, Medicare, etc.)
- Dependent information (if applicable)
Step 3 — Apply for Enrollment
You can apply in several ways:
- Online: Fastest method via VA.gov Health Care Application
- By mail: Fill out and send VA Form 10-10EZ
- In person: Apply at your nearest VA medical center
- By phone: Call 1-877-222-VETS (8387)
Step 4 — Wait for VA Decision
Most applications are processed within a week, though some take longer. You’ll receive an official letter of determination.
Step 5 — Schedule Your First Appointment
Once enrolled, call your local VA medical center to set up primary care. You can also use My HealtheVet to manage appointments online.
