VA Quick Start Guide
Just separated or starting fresh? Follow these steps to secure your effective date, choose the right benefits, and file with confidence.
Step 1 — File an Intent to File
This locks in your benefits start date while you gather evidence. It takes minutes and can save months of pay.
- Download VA Form 21-0966 (Intent to File).
- Fill basic info and check the type of benefit you intend to claim.
- Submit online via VA.gov, by mail, or at a regional office. Keep a copy.
Step 2 — Gather Records & Evidence
Good evidence speeds decisions. Aim for documents that show diagnosis, service connection, and current impact.
- Service records and your DD214
- Medical records (VA & private), test results, treatment notes
- Nexus letters (doctor linking condition to service), if available
- Buddy statements using VA Form 21-4138
Step 3 — Choose Your First Benefit
Start with the benefit that matters most right now. You can add others later.
Step 4 — Submit the Correct Form
Use the right form for your situation. These are the most common:
- 21-526EZ — Initial Disability Claim
- 20-0995 — Supplemental Claim (new & relevant evidence)
- 20-0996 — Higher-Level Review (no new evidence)
- 10182 — Board Appeal (Notice of Disagreement)
Step 5 — Use Tools & Track Status
Estimate your rating and follow your claim online.
